ROBERT A. DONALDSON

A pitch-black road, and rain;
Mud underfoot;
No lights;
The crunch of wheels;
The jangle of a chain;
The noisy bumping of a camion train.

Dim forms;
The shuffling steps of men;
The slush of mud;
A vivid lightning flash,
A rocket's glare,
A shell's slow droning through the air.

Black dank woods;
An endless wagon line;
A spurt of fire,
Across—then blackness;
Endless rain;
The noisy bumping of a camion train.
