WINTER, by RUTH CURTIS DOUGLAS First Line: A calm, pure beauty fills a winter day Last Line: That lifts the soul and sets the heart at ease. Subject(s): Winter | ||||||||
A calm, pure beauty fills a winter day, From opal-tinted dawn, until the west Is flushed with rose as the sun sinks to rest; And sinking sends his last, bright, level ray Across the fields, letting it softly play, Upon a snowy hill with wooded crest. A dark-robed nun, hands folded on her breast, Kneeling in some still, vaulted church to pray. Summer beguiles with beauty warm and bright, The perfume of the rose the hum of bees, Riot of colors pleasing to the sight, Music of birds among the leafy trees; But winter loveliness brings calm delight That lifts the soul and sets the heart at ease. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LOOKING EAST IN THE WINTER by JOHN HOLLANDER WINTER DISTANCES by FANNY HOWE WINTER FORECAST by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN AT WINTER'S EDGE by JUDY JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 34 by JAMES JOYCE WILD GEESE by RUTH CURTIS DOUGLAS SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: ALONZO CHURCHILL by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
