SENT FOR WATER, by
First Line: He was only a little lad
Last Line: "must work together!"
Subject(s): Men

He was only a little lad
Shocking oats with the men,
And jugs of water that they had
Were quickly drained.
He had to take them to the springs again
And he complained.

He took the jugs and found
The springs, by the willowtree,
Gurgling and cold from underground.
Then filled to the brim
He hurried the jugs to the field where he could see
Men waiting him.

He was only a little lad
Shocking oats with the men,
And he kept thinking if he had
The time it took
He'd splash cool water in a cloud and then
Just sit and look.

Then, watching his father drink
From the sweating jug he brought,
He saw him smile once more -- and wink:
"In threatening weather
We men (and there was comfort in the thought!)
Must work together!"
