A SHALLOW chancel, scarce six feet by ten, Which rail'd and painted forms a decent pen; A lofty spire, which bears its glittering vane Some hundred feet exalted from the plain; Say, was this would-be Christian elevation Built for devotion or for ostentation? By the tall spire we gauge the pride of man, The world's devotion by the chancel span. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY PAST AND PRESENT by ROWLAND EYLES EGERTON-WARBURTON |
