Subject(s): Autumn; Seasons; Fall

Some gay leaf-carpets had been laid, where groups
Of maples in their richly-coloured gowns
Kept time with lilting theme-songs of the wind,
And poplars nodded their approval. Then
A few gray-headed flowers, also attuned
To nature, tolled the summer's requiem-bells,
And black-capped chickadees turned somersaults
With ease upon a swaying birch-tree limb.
A yellow butterfly brought memories
Of daffodils, and choirs of tawny oaks
Under the autumn spell, hummed old-time chants
At altars in a grove sun-flecked with gold.
The clang of hoof-beats on the bridle path
Resounded, as the riders passed along,
And pleasing harmony went ringing through
The air in children's happy laughter linked
With cricket-chirpings and a sparrow-call.
The busy squirrels roundabout were lured
Repeatedly by people offering nuts
Which, when accepted, soon were hid away.
Far to the south a company of crows
Seemed ink-blots on the white-shawled sapphire sky.
Time fled unnoticed till the shadows fell.
An airplane moved in swift majestic flight
Toward sunset gold, and then the evening let
Her curtains down and tied them back with stars.
