DRINK DEEP, by EDWIN BARLOW EVANS First Line: Drink deep of life as its illusive day Last Line: O may we still like gods be drinking deep! Subject(s): Life | ||||||||
Drink deep of Life as its illusive day Dies out like footsteps down a midnight street; It fades like roses cast in dust, is fleet As light; amid a deluge of dismay Man sees his high and daring hopes decay, His orient and glowing visions greet His gaze with senile leer of deep deceit And soon in utter darkness die away. Drink deep of Life to pack each priceless hour With royal deeds that check the cruel whips Of fate and ease the grave's excessive sleep; The wine of Life is Wisdom's psychic power When Death will dash the glass from thirsty lips O may we still like Gods be drinking deep! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...PRIVILEGE OF BEING by ROBERT HASS SEAWATER STIFFENS CLOTH by JANE HIRSHFIELD SAYING YES TO LIVING by DAVID IGNATOW THE WORLD IS SO DIFFICULT TO GIVE UP by DAVID IGNATOW |
