OUR AMERICA, by NELLIE H. EVANS First Line: Today our peaceful land views with dismay Last Line: To life and liberty of all mankind. Subject(s): United States; America | ||||||||
Today our peaceful land views with dismay A warring world. The clash of arms in strife Disturbs our quiet shores; the war-lords prey Upon the weak, with threat of ruin of life And liberty of helpless peoples. Power Unjustly gained, deep racial hate and lust Have stirred a righteous voice in this dark hour To hold all guilty, who flout a sacred trust. America! The home of millennium Your life renew; your altar-fires relight In present trials, while through the years to come, With unity and peace the nations bind. Maintain your strength and power, and speak the right To life and liberty of all mankind. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JULY FOURTH BY THE OCEAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS WATCH THE LIGHTS FADE by ROBINSON JEFFERS AFTER TENNYSON by AMBROSE BIERCE MEETING YOU AT THE PIERS by KENNETH KOCH INVOCATION TO THE SOCIAL MUSE by ARCHIBALD MACLEISH THE BLACK HILLS by NELLIE H.
