THE BIRD OF VERDUN, by SARA E. FERBER First Line: Brave bird of verdun Last Line: To the babes of verdun. Subject(s): World War I; First World War | ||||||||
Brave bird of Verdun, You have winged your last flight; In reverent homage Our voices unite. Through shrapnel's barrage That no human could brave; You rose on the wing With your message to save. Your flight saved the day, -- Not cannon or gun; The blue lines were strengthened, Verdun was won. Your wounds were world wounds, Your hazardous flight Helped bring the victory Of right over might. Plaudits of nations Will be yours, perchance, You saved the tricolor -- Vive la France! They will not forget! Flemish mothers will croon Your story in song To the babes of Verdun. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...D'ANNUNZIO by ERNEST HEMINGWAY 1915: THE TRENCHES by CONRAD AIKEN TO OUR PRESIDENT by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE HORSES by KATHARINE LEE BATES CHILDREN OF THE WAR by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE U-BOAT CREWS by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE RED CROSS NURSE by KATHARINE LEE BATES WAR PROFITS by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE UNCHANGEABLE by EDMUND CHARLES BLUNDEN |
