This is the brief physical eye To see the event That shall last forever. Handsmindbreath Live out their time In the presence of a beginning That comes in storm, As once Friday came. Nor shall we see The starved hands of worshippers Covered with rings; The straight pillar of faith Lost in the lace-work of stone; The age-long trail of martyrs, Or the bones of impossible saints. Of us It shall be enough to mark us forever, To say: "They were alive." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE DIFFICULT LAND by EDWIN MUIR TWO PICTURES OF A LEAF by MARVIN BELL THE CELLAR by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR THE PALLOR OF SURVIVAL by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR A SUCCESFUL SPECIES by JOHN CIARDI SAMSON PREDICTS FROM GAZA THE PHILADELPHIA FIRE by LUCILLE CLIFTON THE MEETING AFTER THE SAVIOR GONE by LUCILLE CLIFTON 800,000 VIBRATIONS TO THE SECOND by HORTENSE KING FLEXNER |
