TRACER BULLET, by HORTENSE KING FLEXNER First Line: In a straight line Last Line: The scaffold's uneasy floor. Subject(s): Arms & Armor; Bullets; Patriotism; Soldiers; Weapons; Ammunition | ||||||||
In a straight line Back to the cell Runs this costly deed. Concealed for long in the web of talk, The tapping of typewriter keys, Cigarettes at midnight, The clasping of hands, drinks, commonplace expressions, "O. K.""Let's go" It points from an abstraction of mind To the less simple physical end. So the soldier stands at last Far from the flags on the avenue, The bullet whistling toward him; Or the dreamer Feels beneath his feet The scaffold's uneasy floor. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AN ARMOURY by ALCAEUS OF MYTILENE MAKING CANNON IN BETHLEHEM by VINCENT GODFREY BURNS TO A CERTAIN VERY UGLY BUILDING: THE ARMORY by VINCENT GODFREY BURNS BITTER CHOICE by ELLEN MAGRATH CARROLL THE SWORD by SAMUEL VALENTINE COLE TOWARD THE PIRAEUS: 5 by HILDA DOOLITTLE COMING CHANGES by RICHARD SOLOMON GEDNEY 800,000 VIBRATIONS TO THE SECOND by HORTENSE KING FLEXNER |
