NIGHT AND A CHILD, by NICK AARON FORD First Line: Dark grey clouds massed themselves Last Line: The child dreamed of heaven. Subject(s): Children; Childhood | ||||||||
Dark grey clouds massed themselves Into martial battalions And scudded angrily across the sky. A little child peered out Through an open window To watch the awesome pageant. Suddenly, a long spiral flash of lightning Shot out from beneath the Flitting dome of darkness, Leaving in its wake A mighty burst of thunder Which reverberated Through a thousand hidden caverns And shook the earth. The child, afraid, Snatched down the window-blind. The night wept. A million tiny worlds Scampered out from its swollen eyelids And dashed themselves against the earth, Spilling a flood of colorless blood Upon the ground. The music of the falling tears Became a lullaby: The child slept; the night smiled. Angry clouds rushed away To hide themselves From the cheerful glances Of a thousand twinkling, dancing eyes. The queen of the sky Rode out in her silvery chariot And gazed upon the universe: The child dreamed of Heaven. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE THREE CHILDREN by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN CHILDREN SELECTING BOOKS IN A LIBRARY by RANDALL JARRELL COME TO THE STONE ... by RANDALL JARRELL THE LOST WORLD by RANDALL JARRELL A SICK CHILD by RANDALL JARRELL CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS ON THE DEATH OF FRIENDS IN CHILDHOOD by DONALD JUSTICE THE POET AT SEVEN by DONALD JUSTICE ON A FLY DRINKING FROM HIS CUP by WILLIAM OLDYS |
