RAIN, by
First Line: There are so many kinds of rain
Last Line: And leaving to exalt or jade.
Subject(s): Floods; Rain; Water; Weather

There are so many kinds of rain:
The rain that starts the night before
And continues all next day;
Rain that starts at morning's seven
And leaves it gray till eleven;
Rain that tries to come all day
And gets here just at evening time.
But not for long it sings its song
But leaves us free the evening hours;
Rain that wakes us from our sleep,
Steals upon us in the night,
Begins like sparrows on the roof,
But ends like a hail of pebbles let loose;
Rain that dries just where it lights—
No extra rain to spare;
Rain that comes and comes
And keeps on coming, leaving
Jet pools upon the walks
And gardens like black paste;
Rain that comes so gently
The flowers lift their heads;
Rain that beats them down
To cower in their places;
Rain that leaves them brighter painted;
Rain that leaves them pale
Broken, beaten in their beds,
Marks of mud upon their faces.
There are as many kinds of rain as love;
Coming in as many strange ways
And leaving to exalt or jade.
