MY MOTHER, by ALFRED JENNINGS FUNNELL First Line: There was a time in days a-gone Last Line: And love be enthroned forevermore. Subject(s): Mother's Day; Mothers | ||||||||
There was a time in days a-gone, When I was young, carefree and strong, That Mother seemed to me to be Just a convenience, don't you see? But now, the years since youth have flown And I am older, saner and wiser grown; And time and care -- and burdens, too, Have crushed my heart plumb through and through I find that Mother is more to me Than I supposed she e'er could be. Her loving care, her winsome smile, Her gentleness and patience all the while Brings to me in times of grief A balm that gives my heart surcease. So on this Mother's Day I set apart All the love there's in my heart, For you, my own, my Mother dear -- I dedicate my life, my all, To that dear soul who, through the years, Comforted my heart and dried my tears, Let others claim a world of fame, And others have the things they crave, But my content will be today To live so clean, so brave and true That I may bring to you, my dear, The things that give true heart content And satisfy your every need, Till God decrees that we must part, To meet again on Heaven's shore Where pain shall cease And love be enthroned forevermore. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MY MOTHER'S HANDS by ANDREW HUDGINS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS IN THE 25TH YEAR OF MY MOTHER'S DEATH by JUDY JORDAN THE PAIDLIN' WEAN by ALEXANDER ANDERSON BLASTING FROM HEAVEN by PHILIP LEVINE A HIDDEN HAND - SOMEWHERE by ALFRED JENNINGS FUNNELL |
