BELINDA, by JOHANN LUDWIG WILHELM GLEIM Poet's Biography First Line: The last seduction of her dress Last Line: The fatal venom be your youth's temptation. | ||||||||
THE last seduction of her dress Was loosed. Behold! Belinda's maiden treasure Naked and lovely to the breezes' pleasure, Refiguring Ida's wantonness. Ah me, from that divine caress, My sudden joy, my tribulation's leisure, From all that secret loveliness, My term of Eden's torment must I measure. Weak with desire, bemused, (ah, woe to hear!) In one bright summer noon of admiration I took the wage of many a wrathful year. You that a little care for your salvation, Never (alas! I tell you) let the dear The fatal venom be your youth's temptation. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INCORRIGIBLE DIRIGIBLE by HAYDEN CARRUTH BALLADE OF DEAD FRIENDS by EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON OUR PRAYER OF THANKS by CARL SANDBURG THE DISPUTE OF THE HEART AND BODY OF FRANCOIS VILLON by FRANCOIS VILLON A BOOK OF AIRS: SONG 12.
