DAYBREAK, by EDYTHE BARRETT GOELTZ First Line: The morning air, yet clean and pure Last Line: A new day is born. Subject(s): Light; Morning | ||||||||
The morning air, yet clean and pure Was not yet tinged with the dust of a summer's day. I see leaves stir ever so faintly And the birds become quieter and less impatient in their summons to the early riser. One, Two, then three small bodies soar heavenward, While slowly, Slowly now the sun creeps on high, And with each step carefully folds back the night's damp blanket Carefully, very carefully So as to rouse her sleeping children gently. The white mist now leaves the grass for a shining green Each blade glistens and sparkles in its morning freedom. Each flower unfolds Nods and lifts its drowsy head. The bushes in their turn are wakened And rise to greet the trees. As the last dew leaves the shimmering housetops It is deftly folded aside for another night. A lazy butterfly shakes its wings, First unsteadily, Then suddenly bursts into a restless flight for the day. Now the last damp shadow has departed Everything is bright, A new day is born. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MORNING SONG by KARLE WILSON BAKER THE WHARF ON THAMES-SIDE: WINTER DAWN by LAURENCE BINYON POEM BEFORE BREAKFAST by TED KOOSER I'VE BEEN ASLEEP by PHILIP LEVINE SPRNG DAY: BREAKFAST TABLE by AMY LOWELL THE WAYSIDE STATION by EDWIN MUIR |
