THE LIPS OF APRIL, by ARTHUR HENRY GOODENOUGH First Line: There is vapor in the valley Last Line: But the lips of april smile! Subject(s): April | ||||||||
There is vapor in the valley, There is mist upon the hill, And the robin brings his message To the sleeping daffodil; The clouds that darkly gather Hide the longed-for blue awhile, And April's eyes are tearful But the lips of April smile. The brooks are brown and swollen As they hurry on their way Ever boisterous and impatient, Rushing on to meet the May: Again the grasses waken Where the snow was wont to pile, And April's eyes are tearful But the lips of April smile. She sees, perhaps, a vision Of the world that is to be, Like a prophetess, perceiving What is not for us to see; And she borrows inspiration From the glowing afterwhile, For April's eyes are tearful But the lips of April smile! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FOR CITY SPRING by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET ESSAY ON STONE by HAYDEN CARRUTH APRIL NOT AN INVENTORY BUT A BLIZZARD by ALICE NOTLEY APRIL ONE by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER APRIL by WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS MEMORY OF APRIL by WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS APRIL MORTALITY by LEONIE ADAMS THE CRY OF THE UNCREATED by ARTHUR HENRY GOODENOUGH |
