REMEMBERING THE DARK, by ROSALIE GOODYEAR First Line: I'd like to be the lightning Last Line: In the soft black night. Subject(s): Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
I'd like to be the lightning, A golden shaft from God That strikes into lilies And the soft brown sod. I'd like to be the silver That zigzags up and down Across the blue heavens And through the great town. Yes, I'd like to be electric, A quick come and go, For just being human Seems so very slow. Oh to mix in a motor And drive a great machine; Yes, to be a force eternal That never can be seen. Yet here I stand so puny Among the race of men, While there a great dynamo Chants 'lectricity again. But when I think of loving I can't admire sparks; My mind runs in rhythms, Remembering the dark; And when my heart caresses I like to linger so, My lips seem too human, Love won't let me go. So when it comes to loving I'm not a shaft of light; I'd rather be a woman In the soft black night. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN |
