INCOMING TIDE, by DORA HAGEMEYER First Line: How anxiously the waves rush in and break! Last Line: Disturb and fill with restlessness the soul. Subject(s): Tides | ||||||||
How anxiously the waves rush in and break! Unquiet is the tide. Its destiny Disturbs the rise and fall its motions make Upon the steel-grey surface of the sea. The spreading breaker clutches at the sand As if compelled a higher line to mark; With ever-eager striving to the land And ever-frustrate falling to the dark. What spirit drives the water to new height Upon unconquered regions of the beach? Even the gulls are troubled in their flight As if they too must new horizons reach. So does the shadow of an unseen goal Disturb and fill with restlessness the soul. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...NORTHWIND ESCARPMENT by NORMAN DUBIE TIDE TURNING by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS LOW TIDE ON GRAND-PRE by BLISS CARMAN THE HIGH TIDE AT [OR, ON THE COAST OF] LINCOLNSHIRE by JEAN INGELOW ULTIMA THULE: THE TIDE RISES by HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW THE BOAST OF THE TIDES by WILLIAM ROSE BENET THE TIDES by WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT |
