Subject(s): Death; Graves; Soldiers; Summer; Dead, The; Tombs; Tombstones

How many men of state and high degree
Have placed how many wreathes upon this tomb;
Paying their tribute to the unknown dead
Secure and silent in his narrow room.

If he could know he would not even care,
I think he'd give the homage for one day
Of waking to his mother's morning call,
Of meals and work in the familiar way.

Or for an evening in a wooded park,
In a strange town in summer, with the hiss
Of locusts rasping, and the scent of grass,
And moonlight, and a pretty girl to kiss.
