THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, by GERTRUDE HAHN First Line: How many men of state and high degree Last Line: And moonlight, and a pretty girl to kiss. Subject(s): Death; Graves; Soldiers; Summer; Dead, The; Tombs; Tombstones | ||||||||
How many men of state and high degree Have placed how many wreathes upon this tomb; Paying their tribute to the unknown dead Secure and silent in his narrow room. If he could know he would not even care, I think he'd give the homage for one day Of waking to his mother's morning call, Of meals and work in the familiar way. Or for an evening in a wooded park, In a strange town in summer, with the hiss Of locusts rasping, and the scent of grass, And moonlight, and a pretty girl to kiss. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE SURVIVOR AMONG GRAVES by RANDALL JARRELL SUBJECTED EARTH by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE GRAVE OF MRS.
