WHEN EVENING FLOWS, by IDA LITTLE HALE First Line: The slowly pacing hours have reached once more Last Line: The long cool evening flows like healing balm. Subject(s): Evening; Sonnet (as Literary Form); Sunset; Twilight | ||||||||
The slowly pacing hours have reached once more Those distant portals glowing in the west, And coming shadows beckon one to rest And dream awhile beside a placid shore. The bay is still, untouched by dipping oar; Again we watch the sunset colors burn, The first pale stars in changeless orbits turn, And on the palms a flood of silver pour. The flaming pageantry dies out, and then, Eternal as the ages, countless stars Pattern the sky and shine, remote and calm. Into the restless, seeking hearts of men, That bear, each one, their deeply hidden scars, The long cool evening flows like healing balm. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JOURNEY INTO THE EYE by DAVID LEHMAN FEBRUARY EVENING IN NEW YORK by DENISE LEVERTOV THE HOUSE OF DUST: 1 by CONRAD AIKEN TWILIGHT COMES by HAYDEN CARRUTH IN THE EVENINGS by LUCILLE CLIFTON NINETEEN FORTY by NORMAN DUBIE INDIAN MOUND by IDA LITTLE HALE BRER RABBIT, YOU'S DE CUTES' OF 'EM ALL by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON |
