I OWN A STAR, by J. W. HAND First Line: All day long on a white hospital cot Last Line: Will the light of it fade nor the hope it will give. Subject(s): Hope; Optimism | ||||||||
All day long on a white hospital cot, Lonely, discouraged, bemoaning my lot, The sky overcast, ever threatening rain, And night coming on with its gray pall again Like a lowered curtain that shuts out the light, And with dim fitful dreams repeoples the night. Friends of the day seemed to have drifted afar, When lo, in the sky, a lone twinkling star, (In the span of a window, framed into space,) Gleamed a bright friendly light in the place Where had been clouds no sun rays could rift, And that pin point of light seemed God's loving gift. Ah, now I know why God so many stars made (To cheer when lonely, give hope when afraid.) I fancy they are eyes looking down from above; Our guardian angels, broadcasting God's love, And never, no never, as long as I live Will the light of it fade nor the hope it will give. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HOPE IS NOT FOR THE WISE by ROBINSON JEFFERS SONNET by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON SPRING FLOODS by MAURICE BARING SONNET: 9.
