Come, let us wave a flag and jump and yell: A student army swaggers down the street. (O in the bowels of abysmal hell The silent thunder of ten thousand feet!) Come, let the martial snarls of gloating bands Inflame our patriotic wrath and glee! (O in the languid mire of ruined lands The aching echo of dead minstrelsy!) Come, let the dragons of the sky compete, And guttural-bellowing dreadnoughts mimic battle. (O on the tides of blood the phantom fleet, And in the air Death's quiet iron rattle!) Come, senator and silken profiteer, To scream the victory of those who died. (O in the dark like trumpets, deep and clear The terrible cry of brothers, crucified!) | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...D'ANNUNZIO by ERNEST HEMINGWAY 1915: THE TRENCHES by CONRAD AIKEN TO OUR PRESIDENT by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE HORSES by KATHARINE LEE BATES CHILDREN OF THE WAR by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE U-BOAT CREWS by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE RED CROSS NURSE by KATHARINE LEE BATES WAR PROFITS by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE UNCHANGEABLE by EDMUND CHARLES BLUNDEN CHRIST AT EIGHT by ERNEST HARTSOCK |
