ODE FOR WOMEN'S CLUBS, by ETHEL MEERS HARVEY First Line: The women haste to the clubroom Last Line: Making this world still more glad! Subject(s): Clubs (associations) | ||||||||
The women haste to the clubroom At the hour that the meeting is called, They have finished their various house chores And are ready to be enthralled. They hear the reports of committees, Of moneys collected and spent, They listen to plans for the future, Till they almost regret that they went. Sometimes the music is splendid, But sometimes it's only a wail, "But this is one of our civic jobs, And as women we must not fail." They must help to acquire new members, Others their joys to share, -- To carry their ideals onward, -- Their troubles and sorrows to bear. The lectures are often inspiring, Through some are prosy and dull, Yet with ears that are open for learning, There is always some thought they may cull. At last the business is over, Refreshments are served if you'll wait, -- One day should be saved for this meeting, In spite of a surfeit of date. And now they must hie to their husbands, To their children who wait at their door, "Charity begins at home" it is true, Though aliens come to their shore. After the dinner is over, And the children are all in bed, They tell to the ears of their husbands All that the speakers have said. Sometimes the husbands don't listen, Sometimes they're inspired too! Leastways the wives must unburden And show what they can do. And so they keep up their interest And further the aims they have had, May they ever go onward and forward, Making this world still more glad! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE JUDGMENT OF PARIS by GEORGE SANTAYANA OUR CLUB by SYLVIA DILLAVOU BARCLAY THE BOHEMIANS OF BOSTON AND THEIR WAYS; A MEMORY OF THE JACOBEAN CRAZE by FRANK GELETT BURGESS THE BOROUGH: LETTER 10.
