BELLEAU WOODS, 1918, by NATHANIEL JOHN HASENFUS First Line: All alone in belleau woods Last Line: Gone to peaceful realms on high. Subject(s): Belleau Wood, France; World War I; First World War | ||||||||
All alone in Belleau Woods, Far from the cursory eye, Hangs a helmet on a wooden cross, And a rusty gun leans by. For beneath this cross in Belleau Woods Under France's starry skies, Unknown, from comrades far estranged, A Yankee soldier lies. I said a prayer in Belleau Woods, "Amen-ed" it with a sigh, A prayer for him, the hero dead, Gone to peaceful realms on high. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...D'ANNUNZIO by ERNEST HEMINGWAY 1915: THE TRENCHES by CONRAD AIKEN TO OUR PRESIDENT by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE HORSES by KATHARINE LEE BATES CHILDREN OF THE WAR by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE U-BOAT CREWS by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE RED CROSS NURSE by KATHARINE LEE BATES WAR PROFITS by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE UNCHANGEABLE by EDMUND CHARLES BLUNDEN TO W.P.: 2 by GEORGE SANTAYANA THE IRISH RAPPAREES; A PEASANT BALLAD OF 1691 by CHARLES GAVAN DUFFY |
