A PRAYER, by VIRGINIA HAW First Line: Please grant us wisdom, lord, to understand Last Line: That those who cause all wars are also thine! Subject(s): Prayer; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
Please grant us wisdom, Lord, to understand Thy ways, mysterious and awe-compelling, For in our mortal minds are always welling The doubts which make it hard for us to brand Temptation's lure. We know our lives are planned For us, but we have no way of foretelling Just which of us shall have for his last dwelling Hell's Acre or the Hollow of Thy Hand. One final boon we beg, the greatest one: Recalling those in sky, on land, and sea, Whose fates we dare consider not condign, When humbly we should say, "Thy Will Be Done", Make us to realize, though hard it be, That those who cause all wars are also Thine! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI DRUMS OF THE WIND by VIRGINIA HAW |
