3 A.M, by SARA HENDERSON HAY Poet's Biography First Line: Night has an entity, a shape Last Line: Her subtle footfall in the room. Subject(s): Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
Night has an entity, a shape Of darkness, skeletoned with fear, And few there be who can escape Some chill acquaintanceship with her. Night has a manner of speech, a voice Which she can properly disguise: A mouse's business . . . the small noise Of crumbling embers, or the sighs In empty corners, or the creaks Of doors ajar at no one's hand. In such masked syllables night speaks, And all her listeners understand. Yet, when I lie with you, my love, Curved to your side, and warm, and well; So proud, so gracious night doth move I'd swear she were an archangel; Who otherwhile were grim to hear In bodiless presence through the gloom, And heavy on the frightened ear Her subtle footfall in the room. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN FIELD OF HONOR by SARA HENDERSON HAY |
