HUNGER, by PEARL COUNCIL HIATT First Line: This is his lot - to labor and grow old Last Line: Craving white hyacinths in place of bread. Subject(s): Hunger | ||||||||
This is his lot -- to labor and grow old Where smoke-grimed city walls rise, close and high; Never to know a sunset's burning gold, Nor lift his face to silver-studded sky. Yet sometimes on the city's squalid street, His fingers rest upon a child's bright hair; His seeking eyes find beauty at his feet In bits of colored refuse blowing there. His neighbors cannot see, nor do they ask, What poignant things lie hidden in his heart. They do not know that, bending at his task, His fettered, lonely spirit dwells apart -- Toil-bound and weary; hungry and unfed; Craving white hyacinths in place of bread. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SEVERAL MEASURES FOR THE LITTLE LOST by NORMAN DUBIE THE CORNUCOPIA OF RED AND GREEN COMFITS by AMY LOWELL BIOLUMINESCENCE: 1.
