POEMS FROM NA KEIKI O HAWAII: HE COULDN'T HELP IT, by
First Line: You didn't wash behind your ears
Last Line: "no, mother dear, I went to smile, but my face -- it slipped!"

"You didn't wash behind your ears,"
Said Mother with a sigh.
"I see a line so dark and grim,
You didn't rub that high."
Her little hopeful shrugged and winked
As he strode beside her chair.
It wasn't just the wink, but that naughty, impudent air.
"Did you make a face at me?" She grasped his sleeve. It ripped!
"No, Mother dear, I went to smile, but my face -- it slipped!"
