I looked out my window And saw a leaf come floating down. It hesitated, faltered, as if loathe to stop. At last it fell, lifeless and brown, And lay like a dead hope on the walk. Aye, a dead hope! Even thus do our dreams fall, That once were fresh and fair, and beautiful to see. The raw, cold blasts of life's November Have withered them, and now they dull and homely lie, Like autumn leaves, dead, on the walk. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND AUTUMN SCENE by E.
