MY SHIP, by J. F. HOUCK First Line: I laid its keel with utmost care Last Line: Where waves are stilled, where all is peace. Subject(s): Ships & Shipping | ||||||||
I laid its keel with utmost care But thought at times I could not bear The task. Each morning at the dawn, With hope renewed, I labored on, And now the ship that I have willed And toiled these many years to build Is basking in the sun. Many times Some lashing tides from far off climes Came and tried to steal from me And take my half built craft to sea. Patiently I'll watch and wait For peaceful tides and trust to Fate, That when my ship floats out to sea No rock, no wave, no reef will be A menace to my sturdy boat, That it may ever keep afloat And reach the port where travels cease, Where waves are stilled, where all is peace. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW THE SHIP POUNDING by DONALD HALL ULTRAISTA ONEIRIC by ANSELM HOLLO THE NORTH SHIP by PHILIP LARKIN GOOD SHIPS by JOHN CROWE RANSOM |
