INSOMNIA, by CLAUDE HOUGHTON Poet's Biography First Line: I cannot sleep; the whole night through Last Line: And now at dawn I cannot weep. Subject(s): Insomnia; Night; Sleeplessness; Bedtime | ||||||||
I CANNOT sleep; the whole night through My tortured soul cries out for you, My frenzied hands in wild despair Clutch passionately the empty air. I cannot sleep; I see your name Across the night in lettered flame, And staring vaguely into space I see the marvel of your face. I cannot sleep; the stars above Watch o'er you sleeping with your love, And all your fair remembered charms Lie wrapt in his encircling arms. I cannot sleep; the veils are drawn, And like a pallid ghost comes dawn, All through the night I could not sleep, And now at dawn I cannot weep. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN CHANT D'AUTOMNE by CLAUDE HOUGHTON |
