LOVE IN AUTUMN, by CLAUDE HOUGHTON Poet's Biography First Line: Through the curtains of the rain Last Line: Or the murmur of the leaves. Subject(s): Autumn; Leaves; Love; Nature; Seasons; Fall | ||||||||
THROUGH the curtains of the rain Looms the mist-enchanted town, Like a phantom fortress lost In the mighty realms of night. Now the mauve and mystic eve Tower by tower folds the town And a saffron storm-tossed moon Haunts the ruin of the sky. One by one the lamps are lit, Quivering flowers of tawny flame, And the murmuring voices seem Echoes of a distant sea. Soon the everlasting stars Crown with sleep this silent world, Only withered wind-stirred leaves Wound the silence with their pain. And within this autumn town, Dreams a lovely golden head, Knowing nothing of the darkness, Or the murmur of the leaves. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...OUR AUTUMN by ELIZABETH AKERS ALLEN AN AUTUMN JOY by GEORGE ARNOLD A LEAF FALLS by MARION LOUISE BLISS THE FARMER'S BOY: AUTUMN by ROBERT BLOOMFIELD A LETTER IN OCTOBER by TED KOOSER AUTUMN EVENING by DAVID LEHMAN EVERYTHING THAT ACTS IS ACTUAL by DENISE LEVERTOV CHANT D'AUTOMNE by CLAUDE HOUGHTON |
