THE CATHEDRAL, by CLAUDE HOUGHTON Poet's Biography First Line: My heart is a cathedral vast where thou Last Line: And over all thy spirit broods supreme. Subject(s): Candles; Churches; Prayer; Public Worship; Cathedrals; Church Attendance | ||||||||
MY heart is a cathedral vast where thou Art praised and glorified in silent prayer. Within its inmost shrine where shadows sleep, There is thine image set: and all my thoughts, Pure white-robed priests, pause reverently there And praise thy name in rapturous ecstasy. Amid the silence and the mystic gloom My dreams are ranged like giant candles set Within the carven niches of the walls, And flicker there with pale transparent flames Amid the opal wreaths of incense faint That rise fantastically towards the dome.... My memories are the shadowy worshippers, And over all thy spirit broods supreme. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE WHEELING GOSPEL TABERNACLE by JAMES WRIGHT GIRLS GOING TO CHURCH by JOHN CIARDI EFFECT OVER DISTANCE by ALBERT GOLDBARTH THE RESPECTABLE BURGHER, ON 'THE HIGHER CRITICISM' by THOMAS HARDY GOSPEL VILLANELLE by ANDREW HUDGINS SONG BEFORE SORROW by LOUISE A.
