LAND, by MARGERY ELDREDGE HOWELL First Line: I have great need of land to hold Last Line: Stars to secure the night. Subject(s): Property; Possessions | ||||||||
I have great need of land to hold, Fields of my own to keep, Rich soil for love and loyalty Whose searching roots strike deep. I would break ground and sow good seed, That I may know once more The reassurance of tall grain, Sound for the winter store. There must be beasts for me to tend; I would be comforted By the dumb faith of living things That trust me to be fed. My feet would walk a tranquil path Along unhurried ways, Where slowly-turning seasons cast Their drift of quiet days. I have great need of land to hold. I claim my ancient right: Familiar hills to shelter me, Stars to secure the night. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ODE; CHAMBER AND SOUL by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS FAREWELL TO FARGO: SELLING THE HOUSE by KAREN SWENSON GETTING AND SPENDING by LINDA GREGERSON LEGAL FICTION by WILLIAM EMPSON SHIPS AT ANCHOR by MARGERY ELDREDGE HOWELL |
