Boatman, look to your oars, Here is a friend outbound, A soldier's last parade To a distant bugle's sound. He knew the gleam of the sword, He answered the call of drums, Lower his country's flag, Bravely a soldier comes. He came with a dream achieved, He came with his laurels earned, With never a backward look Where the fading shore-lights burned. Boatman, there is a moon, There are no reefs ahead, Steer for the Great Unknown, All has been done, and said. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND THE ROADS TO DEVON by NORA E.
