I was born to wildness, free and light of wing, You caught my heart and caged it in a golden ring; I stilled my protest, bent me to your will, Ceased my futile fluttering since you would have me still. I, who was made for music and the wild crags of the sea, Made myself the tame-bird that you would have me be. Last night was lonely, filled with quiet stars, And a wandering sea-wind rattled at the bars, Pressed against the door lock fingering the key, Whispering of freedom to one who once was free. My heart is waiting: will there come a dawn When you seek the cage again and find the tame-bird gone? Throw the window open -- Toss away the ring -- Hush!
