THE GREAT AMERICAN HOME, by MRS. F. C. JAHNKE First Line: America promised them freedom Last Line: Is the great american home. Subject(s): Home; United States - Immigration & Emigtration | ||||||||
America promised them freedom And wisdom and wealth and fame. So out from every country The bolder spirits came. They settled in city and hamlet, In the country and by the sea, Each filled with a great ambition For the thing he could do and be. They builded the church and the schoolhouse, They molded the voice of the press. Their President cast one ballot, And the poor man cast no less. And each learned of his neighbor something That was better than he had known. And life was richer and sweeter And "Not For Bread Alone." And the home grew in culture and comfort, With a vision far brighter each day, Till the force of its mighty power No hand on earth could stay. It was builded on good foundation, And work and love -- aye, and prayer, And freedom and knowledge and pleasure Are all represented there. Oh broadcast it oft from each station, Engrave it on hardest of stone, That the heart and the soul of the nation Is the Great American Home. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...POSTCARDS TO COLUMBUS by SHERMAN ALEXIE THE EMIGRANT IRISH by EAVAN BOLAND THE PALLOR OF SURVIVAL by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER by DENISE DUHAMEL |
