PRAYER THAT AN INFANT MAY NOT DIE, by FRANCIS JAMMES Poet's Biography First Line: Lord, spare to them this very little child Last Line: You live forever at your mother's side. Subject(s): Mothers & Sons; Prayer; Religion; Theology | |||
Lord, spare to them this very little child as You preserve a grass-blade in the wind. What will it cost You, since the mother weeps, not to have it die there in a brief while, as a matter that cannot be avoided? If You grant it life, it will go next year to toss roses in the Lord's day festival! But You are too good! 'Twould not be You, good Lord, Who place blue death upon the rosy cheek while there are still fine places where You can set sons beside their mothers at the window. But why not here? Ah! since the hour calls, remember, Lord, before the dying child, You live forever at Your mother's side. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS |
