GOLDEN AUGUST IN DAKOTA, by ADELINE M. JENNEY First Line: The road up to high skylines Last Line: With shining, blessed hands. Subject(s): South Dakota | ||||||||
The road up to high skylines Is a jocund trail to me, When August hills curve, gold on blue, In harvest ecstasy. For, when I reach the skyline Space is here and far horizons, Swing of blue and valiant sun; Space is here and colorcolor! Arcs of tessellated hills, Green and gold, that slip like music Down to where the river stills Its bright rhythm in the willows Broidering the lusty green Of great cornfields which the breezes Ruffle to a shimmering sheen. Space is here and a swift rapture, Peace with vibrant jubilee, As the rows and swirls of grain shocks And great straw buttes' majesty Etch in gold, on golden stubble, Summer's rich fecundity. So the road up to high skylines Chants life's radiant litany, The mystery of eucharist To toil's vast antiphony; For, on this sunsweet hillcrest, The Sacred Presence stands And breaks for men their daily bread With shining, blessed hands. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...PIONEERS OF SOUTH DAKOTA by CHARLOTTE LOUISE BERTLESEN WHAT OF BEAUTY by OLIVE CHRISTENSEN HOMETOWN by CHARLES BADGER CLARK JR.
