GUERDON, by LENA L. JENNINGS First Line: I sat on the doorstone of heart's desire Last Line: My heart's desire is there. Subject(s): Courts & Courtiers; Royal Court Life; Royalty; Kings; Queens | ||||||||
I sat on the doorstone of heart's desire, Too humble and spent to stand. The knocker hung bold above my head But I could not raise my hand. The Guard marched by but I did not see, The King, but I did not rise, The maids of the Court with laughter and glee, But weariness held my eyes. You leaned from your casement above me there, Your voice to my veins was wine. Light as a leaf then you touched my hair; The strength of your soul was mine. Now whether by sword or whether by sign, By vine or by winding stair, I find my way to your inmost bower, My heart's desire is there. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BOTHWELL: PART 4 by WILLIAM EDMONSTOUNE AYTOUN IN PHARAOH'S TOMB by HAYDEN CARRUTH FOR THE INVESTITURE by CECIL DAY LEWIS ELEGY ASKING THAT IT BE THE LAST; FOR INGRID ERHARDT, 1951-1971 by NORMAN DUBIE L,ENVOI: IN OUR TIME by ERNEST HEMINGWAY VASHTI by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON LINES ON CARMEN SYLVA by EMMA LAZARUS TO CARMEN SYLVA (QUEEN OF ROUMANIA) by EMMA LAZARUS |
