WHITE SACRIFICE, by
First Line: Not to the distant star that presses white
Last Line: Yielding oblations to unworthy gods.
Subject(s): Beauty; Brides; Stars

Not to the distant star that presses white
Upon the velvet stretch of evening sky,
Nor to the still white sail by waning light
Made lovely as a waiting bride, would I
Intone the measures of my silent song:
Not to the iris-bordered lake where drift
White swans as silently as mist along
The shadowed shore, nor to the lunar gift
Of pallid beauty lavished on lotus blooms
Alone -- I lately walked where pearly plumes
Of locust cast their petals wild and sweet
Upon the path. I stayed my erring feet
And knelt to find the blown and broken pods
Yielding oblations to unworthy gods.
