WHITE SACRIFICE, by MILDRED CARTWRIGHT JOBSON First Line: Not to the distant star that presses white Last Line: Yielding oblations to unworthy gods. Subject(s): Beauty; Brides; Stars | ||||||||
Not to the distant star that presses white Upon the velvet stretch of evening sky, Nor to the still white sail by waning light Made lovely as a waiting bride, would I Intone the measures of my silent song: Not to the iris-bordered lake where drift White swans as silently as mist along The shadowed shore, nor to the lunar gift Of pallid beauty lavished on lotus blooms Alone -- I lately walked where pearly plumes Of locust cast their petals wild and sweet Upon the path. I stayed my erring feet And knelt to find the blown and broken pods Yielding oblations to unworthy gods. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE EPIC STARS by ROBINSON JEFFERS HYMN TO THE STARS by GEORGE LAWRENCE ANDREWS CHRISTMAS TREE by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS CLEMATIS MONTANA by MADELINE DEFREES THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE by JAMES GALVIN TO SEE THE STARS IN DAYLIGHT by JAMES GALVIN |
