ATMOSPHERE, by LOUISE A. JOHNSON First Line: The house stood out-lined harsh against the sky Last Line: A loveliness we scarce suspect is there. Subject(s): Architecture & Architects; Desolation; Houses, Deserted; Love | ||||||||
The house stood out-lined harsh against the sky, No architect's device to beautify Nor soften its austere and ugly mien! And sternly-visaged folk within its walls Imparted to the place the gloom that palls. As dreary aspect as was ever seen! But down around the house there came in sight, In Spring, a perfect vision of delight Gay blooms, reward of woman's loving care Transformed the place. The thought came to my mind That sometimes deep within the heart we find A loveliness we scarce suspect is there. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD AN OLD WOMAN WALKING ON THE ROAD by LOUISE A.
