RESIGNATION, by
First Line: I prayed: 'god, make me useful
Last Line: "o, father, keep me true!"

I prayed: "God, make me useful,
An aid to those I meet;
O, may I help my students
To see life's beauty sweet.
I long, O God in heaven,
To show them things worth-while
And help them meet temptations
That may their paths beguile."

Then came harsh criticisms
And stinging words that hurt,
And I would fain avoid them --
Those cutting things avert --
But still they came upon me
From sources here and there;
My soul in bitter anguish
Reached out to God in prayer:

"O, must I thus be tested
And chastened, Lord, and tried?
Are these, my God, the answers
To prayers my heart has cried?
Must I, to be most useful,
Drink deep of sorrow's cup,
That I may aid some other
When he those drops may sup?

"If then with understanding
I'll hear another's woe,
And if I can the better
Show him the way to go,
If thus I'm being fitted
For service I would do,
I'll bear them all most gladly;
O, Father, keep me true!"
