IOWA GOTHIC, by ELSNER KASPER First Line: The broad and sunlit fields around Last Line: A poet with a better role. Subject(s): Iowa | ||||||||
The broad and sunlit fields around He looks upon with pride, For he has plowed the fertile ground; There seeds of plenty now abide. He sees the harvest in the fall, -- (O God, Thy blessings on the land!) And, rising with the rooster's call, He sets to work with heart and hand. He sees the seasons come and go And loves them all, a stalwart soul; Midst summer's sun and winter's snow, A poet with a better role. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE DREAM SONGS: 290 by JOHN BERRYMAN AFTER VERLAINE by ANSELM HOLLO VISITING MY OWN HOUSE IN IOWA CITY by GERALD STERN FOUR POSTULATES by MICHAEL ANANIA THE RING AND THE CASTLE by AMY LOWELL THE RETIRED CAT by WILLIAM COWPER THE SKELETON OF THE FUTURE; AT LENIN'S TOMB by CHRISTOPHER MURRAY GRIEVE |
