SILENCE, by LUCY KENT First Line: Out into the afternoon Last Line: Whom silence made forever one. Subject(s): Afternoon; Earth; Life; Silence; World | ||||||||
Out into the afternoon We went pressed close beneath the sun Conscious of life, feeling the beat Of seconds yielding one by one. The tremulous wonder of the earth At pregnancy, filled all the world And we could hear the gentle stir Of hidden seeds as they uncurled. We touched the earth; we felt the grass Grow up through us as we lay prone; We felt each feeding tree, its lust For nourishment became our own. We moved to rise from earth again And lifted earth with us, so strong Into our darkened hearts had pierced The burning arrow of its song. And hand in hand we struggled back We dared not speak, when all was done, Lest sound should separate us two Whom silence made forever one. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BROKEN BALANCE by ROBINSON JEFFERS SUBJECTED EARTH by ROBINSON JEFFERS GEOMETAPHYSICS by MARGARET AVISON NIAGARA by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS SOPHISTICATION by CONRAD AIKEN I SEE CHILE IN MY REARVIEW MIRROR by AGHA SHAHID ALI WASHING OUR HANDS OF THE REST OF AMERICA by MARVIN BELL THE EARTH IS A LIVING THING by LUCILLE CLIFTON |
