IN PASSING, by ETHEL VEVA KING First Line: So many there have been who touched Last Line: They waked to flame my heart. Subject(s): Love | ||||||||
So many there have been who touched Some moment of my way, A passing throng through all the years Of solemn, sad and gay, Of old who smiled and young who wept, Of hearts which knew but youth, Of lives which dwelt in memories, Of souls that were uncouth. So many came and for a time Have gained my ear or eye, Before they pasesd like drifting clouds Across a wind-swept sky. They left their laughter on my life Sometimes they left their tears, Their sorrows marked upon my brow A record of the years. O there were freaks and there were bores And those who made me frown, And rich and poor and wise and those Who wore a martyr's crown, And lives there were which lifted me, And held me at my best, And lives that were such tragic tales They left my soul depressed. I smile at them, a motley throng, And yet with tender mirth, They were so worried, weary, worn With paltry things of earth; And yet all these who walked with me Each with his little part They gave me all I found in life; They waked to flame my heart. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD |
