OLD WOMAN, by
First Line: Soledad is very old / her meekly patient face
Last Line: But there are shadows -- shadows -- night.
Subject(s): Poverty

Soledad is very old,
Her meekly patient face
Is lined with the cruel poverty
That so often haunts her race.
In her deep-set pleading eyes
No laughter shines, but misery
Of generations lies.
She lives in a callejon
In the smallest patio there,
She slouches huddled in the sun,
Brown skin showing through her rags
An old reboso round her head.
As I pass she shrilly cries,
"Nina -- one centavo -- for bread."
In Mexico the sun is bright,
But there are shadows -- shadows -- night.
