EAST TEXAS, by IRENE DENMAN KISER First Line: We're traveling today in east texas Last Line: Where the red hilly highway ends and starts. Subject(s): Texas; Travel; Journeys; Trips | ||||||||
We're traveling today in East Texas Where the oak trees are trimmed with Spanish moss, The pine trees have reached skyscraper height And the pointed leaves of the sweet-gum trees Make shadow-lace on the ground. The fresh wild beauty of the roadside flowers Defies the artist's brush. Now the parties of yellow butterflies Are frolicking in delight. Well-fed cattle stand stomach-deep In the cool still waters of the streams, And shrewd-looking, slender black hogs Are running wild in the woods. Sparsely settled and peaceful are these parts Where the red hilly highway ends and starts. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...RICHARD, WHAT'S THAT NOISE? by RICHARD HOWARD LOOKING FOR THE GULF MOTEL by RICHARD BLANCO RIVERS INTO SEAS by LYNDA HULL DESTINATIONS by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE ONE WHO WAS DIFFERENT by RANDALL JARRELL THE CONFESSION OF ST.
