SUNSET ON REELFOOT LAKE, by
First Line: On reelfoot lake, at close of day
Last Line: When the lonely waters have gone to rest.
Subject(s): Evening; Lakes; Sunset; Twilight; Pools; Ponds

On Reelfoot Lake, at close of day,
The waters sleep in red and gray.
The blackbirds cross the scarlet sky
And settle in the trees close by.
The cypress snags, like ancient men,
Repeat their prayers till dusk, and then
The lake grows calm in dim twilight
And day turns gently into night.

I've seen the lake at silver dawn
In misty fog, all pale and wan;
Or watched the storms with raging hate
Churn the waters to green and slate;
Or in the noontides, hot and white,
Reflect the sky's blue-brassy light.
But in sunset peace I love it best
When the lonely waters have gone to rest.
