THE NEW JERUSALEM, by
First Line: And did these feet, in pre-war days
Last Line: In england's blind and shuttered land!
Subject(s): Jerusalem; World War Ii; Second World War

And did these feet, in pre-war days,
Walk along England's lighted streets?
And were shop-windows all ablaze,
And coppers silent on their beats?
And did that Corporation bus
Shine forth in splendour from afar?
And was it mere child's play for us
To dodge the swiftly-moving car?

Bring me my torch of waning power!
Bring me my phosphor button bright!
Bring me my stick — O, dreadful hour!
That brings the darkness of the night!
I will not cease from pavement taps,
Nor shall my stick sleep in my hand
Till I have tested all the gaps
In England's blind and shuttered land!
